Conquer Hyrule and the Dark World with optimal dungeon routing, Silver Arrow collection, Ice Rod locations, and essential bottle upgrades.
Foundational Preparation Before the Dark World
Before setting foot in the treacherous Dark World, collecting key utility items, bottles, and defense upgrades in the Light World is mandatory to prevent getting overwhelmed by late-game dungeon damage.
The Four Empty Magic Bottles
Bottles allow Link to carry life-saving Fairies, Green Magic Potions, or Blue Health & Magic Elixirs into dungeons.
- 1.Bottle 1 (Kakariko Merchant): Buy from the merchant sitting on the carpet near the village center for 100 Rupees.
- 2.Bottle 2 (Kakariko Inn / Bar): Enter the back entrance of the village pub. Open the chest sitting on the kitchen floor.
- 3.Bottle 3 (Lake Hylia Bridge Guy): Once you obtain Zora's Flippers from the waterfall shop for 500 Rupees, swim beneath the long stone bridge east of Lake Hylia and talk to the camping vagrant.
- 4.Bottle 4 (Desert Locksmith & Blacksmith Box): In the Desert of Mystery entrance, locate the sleeping thief near the sign. After finding the locked green chest in the Dark World blacksmith shop, lead the locksmith back to open it for your fourth bottle.
Essential Spells & Medallions
- •Ether Medallion: Travel to the peak of Death Mountain above the Tower of Hera. Read the stone slab using the Book of Mudora. Freezes all enemies on screen.
- •Bombos Medallion: Located on the desert cliff west of the Desert Palace in the Light World. Stand on the high plateau in the Dark World, use the Magic Mirror to warp across, and read the slab. Ignites all ground enemies.
- •Quake Medallion: Throw a skull into the circle of stones near the Lake of Ill-Omen in the Dark World to awaken the giant catfish who tosses you the medallion.
- •Ice Rod: Hidden inside the stone cave on the southeastern shore of Lake Hylia. Required to freeze the fire head of Trinexx in Turtle Rock.
- •Bug-Catching Net: Speak to the sick boy in bed in Kakariko Village to catch Fairies and Bees.
Step-by-Step Dark World Dungeon Walkthrough & Boss Strategies
Dungeon 1: Palace of Darkness (Crystal 1)
- •Primary Treasure: The Magic Hammer. Used to pound wooden stakes flat and flip turtles onto their backs.
- •Boss: Helmasaur King
- •*Phase 1*: Smash his hardened face mask with the Magic Hammer or drop Bombs in front of his path. Keep your distance when his tail wiggles to avoid the tail whip.
- •*Phase 2*: Once the green mask cracks open, an emerald gem in his forehead is exposed. Unload arrows directly into the gem to eliminate him in seconds.
Dungeon 2: Swamp Palace (Crystal 2)
- •Water Regulation Requirement: You must open the Light World floodgate near the swamp ruins first so water fills the trenches in the Dark World palace.
- •Primary Treasure: The Hookshot. Grabs onto wooden chests, pots, and statues to cross wide chasms.
- •Boss: Arrghus
- •*Phase 1*: Arrghus floats covered in protective puff balls. Use the Hookshot to rip the small eyeballs off one by one, then slash each with your sword.
- •*Phase 2*: Once unprotected, Arrghus jumps into the ceiling and slams down into the water. Dash around the room perimeter, turn, and hit him with sword spin attacks.
Dungeon 3: Skull Woods (Crystal 3)
- •Navigation Trick: Skull Woods has multiple outdoor entrances. If you reach a dead end, exit to the overworld forest and search for the hollow skeleton jaws.
- •Primary Treasure: The Fire Rod. Shoots flaming fireballs across the screen and melts ice obstacles.
- •Boss: Mothula
- •The floor moves continuously in shifting directions while spiked traps slide across the room. Stand on a stationary block, equip the Fire Rod, and shoot Mothula as he hovers. Eight direct Fire Rod hits defeat him instantly.
Dungeon 4: Thieves' Town (Crystal 4)
- •Primary Treasure: Titan's Mitt. Upgrades lifting strength to lift heavy dark green boulders across the overworld.
- •Boss: Blind the Thief
- •Locate the maiden in the dungeon cell and escort her to the boss room with the skylight. The light reveals her true identity as Blind.
- •*Strategy*: Blind's floating head shoots lasers while detachable heads circle the arena. Keep your shield raised to deflect laser bursts, stay behind his torso, and execute sword spin attacks.
Dungeon 5: Ice Palace (Crystal 5)
- •Primary Treasure: Blue Mail. Cuts all incoming enemy damage in half.
- •Boss: Kholdstare
- •*Phase 1*: Kholdstare is encased in a thick block of ice while falling icicles crash from the ceiling. Cast Bombos or shoot 8 blasts from the Fire Rod to melt the ice block.
- •*Phase 2*: Three large floating eyeballs scatter across the room. Finish them off with charged sword slashes or Fire Rod blasts.
Dungeon 6: Misery Mire (Crystal 6)
- •Weather Ritual: Stand on the medallion symbol in the swamp rain, equip the Ether Medallion, and strike the air to part the storm clouds and open the dungeon.
- •Primary Treasure: Cane of Somaria. Creates red solid blocks that can be pushed onto floor switches.
- •Boss: Vitreous
- •A giant eyeball surrounded by floating lightning slimes. Stand in the bottom corner with your sword pointed outward. As small eyeballs approach, slash them cleanly. When the giant eyeball hops forward, shoot it with arrows or charged sword beams.
Dungeon 7: Turtle Rock (Crystal 7)
- •Primary Treasure: Mirror Shield. Absorbs lasers and large energy fireballs that normal shields cannot stop.
- •Boss: Trinexx
- •Trinexx is a three-headed dragon composed of a fire head, an ice head, and a rocky center body.
- •*Fire Head*: Shoot with the Ice Rod to freeze it, then strike repeatedly with your sword.
- •*Ice Head*: Shoot with the Fire Rod to melt it, then strike with your sword.
- •*Main Body*: The shell shatters and turns into an undulating snake. Slash the glowing center segment of its tail until defeated.
The Final Battle: Ganon's Tower & The Pyramid of Power
Upgrading to the Golden Sword (Level 4)
Before storming Ganon's Tower, purchase the giant Super Bomb from the Bomb Shop in the Dark World. Carry it to the cracked stone wall on the Pyramid of Power. Toss your Tempered Sword into the fairy fountain to receive the Golden Sword (Level 4), doubling your melee damage output!
Defeating Ganon
At the top of the Pyramid of Power, Link faces Ganon in an epic four-phase showdown:
- 1.Trident Whirlwind: Ganon tosses his trident, teleports around the arena, and summons fire keese. Stay mobile and hit him with sword slashes.
- 2.Floor Collapse: The outer edge of the arena breaks away. Avoid falling into the dark abyss.
- 3.The Silver Arrow Finishing Sequence: Ganon extinguishes the torch lamps, plunging the chamber into pitch blackness.
- •Step 1: Light the two wall torches using the Fire Rod or Lamp.
- •Step 2: Slash Ganon with your Golden Sword to freeze him blue.
- •Step 3: While stunned blue, immediately fire a Silver Arrow into his body.
